The Shield Around K: The Story Of K Records (1998) Rating: NR
A documentary on the "other" Washington State record label (the other being Sub Pop of course). I was a bit disappointed in this one in that it came across as more of a vehicle to promote Calvin Johnson (co-founder of K Records)'s Beat Happening band than an actual history of K Records. The highlights for me were the interview with Ian MacKaye of Fugazi fame and a brief clip of L7 from a K Fest gig. Imagine if Nirvana had signed to this label as Kurt Cobain had wanted. I wonder if history would be the same.
